Pop Surrealism Meets Pop Culture! Artist Mark Ryden is teaming up with Mattel Creations for Pink Pop, an exhibition of paintings, sculptures and drawings with Barbie as the focus.
Mark Ryden x Barbie Exhibition
We were thrilled to hear about the upcoming Mark Ryden x Barbie Exhibition! Here’s what we know so far. Mattel Creations, the brand’s special offerings of unique Mattel toys and art, has tapped the lowbrow artist to give a little edge to the world’s most popular doll. Pink Pop, a jointly organized show between Kasmin Gallery and Mattel will be a pop up exhibition that will feature both new and previous works by Ryden.
As part of the experience, a set of limited-edition Barbie dolls and accessories that personify Pop Surrealism will be on display.
The artist has previously immortalized the doll in some of his artworks, such as in in his 1994 painting, Saint Barbie and as part of the automaton diorama Memory Lane, from the 2014 exhibition “The Gay Nineties West.”
For the upcoming exhibit, the Pop-surrealist has created a new body of work, including paintings, sculptures and drawings and, most excitedly, Mattel Creations will also offer a limited-edition collection of premium Barbie dolls designed to bring Ryden’s signature iconography to a collectible toy form.
