When you hear the term “sponge painting” you’re likely to think of an old sponge dipped in paint and used as a stamp. But I’m talking about a different kind; the kind where old sponges become oceans, pools and fields of grass for the charming miniature paintings by Milan artist Golsa Golchini.

Italian artist Golchini works in both large and small scale. She has a wonderfully diverse repertoire of work in which she incorporates household objects such as books, bottles, mirror frames, globes and cardboard, as an integral part of her narrative. Embellishing various objects and materials with her impressive realism skills, she turns them into backgrounds for the subjects of the piece. The canvases for her work aren’t merely decorative, but take on a different form when combined with her subject matter.

Of her many clever assemblages, I was most struck by her simple paintings on old household sponges. Fish and people, rendered in miniature, come alive and interact with the sponge. She then frames the artwork in a simple white shadow box to result in a charming and aesthetically appealing piece.

“My artworks are creations through different visual art’s languages. I love to combine all that I have ever learnt during my journey and to serve it on a silver plate to the observer. I truly believe that the highest purpose of Art is to be loved and my everyday mission is to make a type of Art that speaks a language that can be comprehended by everyone and that can conquer many eyes and hearts. I believe the era of “complicated” artworks has come to an end and our century is in true need of simplicity and joy.” – Golsa Golchini
