It’s said that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. If that’s the case, the forthcoming JW Anderson Pigeon Clutch may be worth the asking price. The unusual women’s handbag is now available for pre-order due to public demand.

The JW Anderson Pigeon Clutch was initially designed as a prop for the runway show of the Northern Irish designer’s Men’s Fall 2022 collection, in the middle of omicron. Meant to be tongue-in-cheek, the designer wanted to create something to make people laugh during the midst of the Covid pandemic. The response was so massive, he decided to produce it and re-introduce it for 2023 and it’s now available for pre-order.

An Instagram post by Sarah Jessica Parker and a photo of her carrying the clutch on-set during the filming of the second season of And Just Like That nearly tripled the traffic on the brand’s website where the handbag is the most searched for product.

Looking like a life-like version of a Rock (or Feral) Pigeon, the $890 handbag from the hot young fashion designer is made of 3D printed resin and has a hinged wing that pens to reveal a compartment.

Jonathan Anderson originally showed the pigeon as part of his men’s fall 2022 collection in the middle of omicron, because like the rest of us, he desperately needed a laugh. “I wanted an element of something a bit silly in the collection, a contrast to the situation at the time,” he tells BAZAAR in an interview. “Fashion has this great way of allowing us to escape reality. Also pigeons are so inherently unglamorous, it’s funny to turn it into a functional object like a clutch bag that’s typically seen as quite glamorous.”

About the designer:

Fashion designer Jonathan Anderson
Fashion designer Jonathan Anderson

Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson established JW Anderson in 2008.

At first an elaborate collection of accessories quickly attracted attention, enabling the fledgling label to show on-schedule during 2008’s London Fashion Week.

Its unique design aesthetic offers a modern interpretation of masculinity and femininity by creating thought-provoking silhouettes through a conscious cross-pollination between menswear and womenswear elements. This idiosyncratic perspective, which earned the label a cult following, prompted JW Anderson to present a women’s capsule collection in 2010.

JW Anderson has evolved into an internationally renowned and award-winning brand. In the past accolades have included British Fashion Awards for ‘Emerging Talent, Ready-to-Wear’ (2012), ‘The New Establishment Award’ (2013) and ‘Menswear Designer of the Year’ (2014). Most recently at the 2015 British Fashion Awards the brand received an historic double award for ‘Menswear’ and ‘Womenswear Designer of the Year’, the first time any brand has ever won both prestigious awards. Most recently, at the 2017 British Fashion Awards the brand received the award of ‘Womenswear Designer of the Year’.
