Although it appears like one of nature’s incredible wonders – kind of like a lake with a sphincter – the Covão do Conchos Spillway in Portugal is a man made structure that is part of the Conchos Dam in Serra da Estrela, the country’s highest mountain range.
Covão do Conchos Spillway
Built in 1955, the small dam has a hydroelectric system that gathers water from Ribeira das Naves and diverts it to Lagoa Comprida Dam through a 4,984 ft. (1519 meters) long tunnel made of concrete and granite.
In this amazing aerial drone video by Portugal-based YouTuber ProBilder (aka TheTiago88), we get an up close and personal view of Covão do Conchos.
The famous “lagoon waterfall” is 4.6m high, 48 meters wide at the top ,1,519 meters in length and can store up to 120 thousand cubic meters of water.
