Mexican architecture firm Punto Arquitectonico renovated an old home in the historic center of Yucatan’s capital Merida and transformed it into Casa Xolotl, (now called Casa Aurea) a beautifully designed romantic getaway you can rent for $220 a night through Airbnb. The home’s most compelling feature is the swimming pool area, created from a preexisting traditional cistern in the patio.
Casa Xólotl by Punto Arquitectonico
We previously introduced you to the luxurious and beautifully designed Chablé Resort and Spa in the Yucatan with its gorgeous cenotes and holistic approach to wellness, but if you’re looking for something a bit more private in the same area of Mexico, this is the place.
The remarkably romantic renovated Casa Xolotl by Punto Arquitectonico combines traditional Mexican architecture with modern comfort and a spectacular pool. It’s hard to believe it was once the old dilapidated stone home you see below:
Access to the property is positioned at the extreme right of the first bay of the home’s misleading facade which conceals an oasis beyond its walls.
Arranged as three spaces connected by the courtyard, you enter through a hall that serves to move you from the urban reality outside and into the serene atmosphere of the interior.
Once through the entry hall you encounter the first space that comprises a kitchen, dining room, living area and guest suite. The kitchen, living and dining are located in a single room that leads to the guest bedroom and bath as well as to the courtyard and pool.
A door off of the living area leads you to the guest bedroom and bath.
The kitchen area transitions into a covered outdoor living room, linked through sliding glass doors that blend the space visually and functionally. The open courtyard, characterized by a curving pool and jacuzzi, is inarguably Casa Xólotl’s biggest attraction and makes up the second space.
The courtyard features remnants of the previously existing walls through which the pool flows from the courtyard toward the center of the patio.
An old cistern has been refurbished as a jacuzzi and has a waterfall feature at its entrance.
In the evenings, the pool, jacuzzi and courtyard are simply magical.
The third space is separate from the other two. It contains the Master Suite and is designed as an independent villa in the back of the home.
Awarded best historic renovation 2018 at the Bienal de Arquitectura Yucateca, best house renovation 2018 at the Bienal de Arquitectura Nacional and “Mencion honorifica” at the prestigious “Firenze entre muros” architectural contest, this is a must see property.
