The new 2016 Pirelli Calendar has just been unveiled and is receiving press for its departure in style from the previous calendars for which the tire company is famous. Best known for their suggestive sex appeal, the annual coveted Calendar is created for their private clients and is not produced for the mass market.
2016 Pirelli Calendar by Annie Leibovitz
We’ve blogged about past Pirelli Calendars before as far back as 2011 with Karl Lagerfeld’s version and more recently Steven Meisel’s 2015 version. Despite the press, this is not the first “modest” version of the usually NSFW calendar: the 2013 Pirelli Calendar photographed by Steve McCurry also showed fully clothed models.
The 2016 calendar was photographed by the legendary Annie Leibovitz, is shot in black and white and actually focuses on the accomplishments of the models as opposed to on their outward appearances.
The calendar includes a forward by activist and actress Yao Chen, in which she writes “Though the calendar has, on rare occasions, featured women in clothes, this is the first time there is no provocation in the posing, and the first time the attraction of the subjects is in their résumés, not their measurements.”
