Rouge Louboutin, a timeless shade of red nail color and inspired by the iconic sole of every Christian Louboutin shoe has just been launched. The $50 nail lacquer comes in an unusual bottle with a cap inspired by the highest heel Christian Louboutin ever designed.

Vogue reports that Christian came up with the signature crimson sole of his shoes when he was working on an early prototype, felt something was missing, and painted the underside with his assistant’s nail polish. “People talked about ‘Louboutin Red’ even before I decided to do beauty,” he says. “When I was thinking of the red for nails, I thought, I have to have an iconic red, as it’s really my identity. I was thinking of the red of Silvana Mangano’s nails in the 1967 movie Le Streghe [“The Witches”], and of a flamenco dancer I once saw who was like the famous Carmen Amaya. She dressed in men’s clothes—black pants, a white shirt, a black waistcoat—but when she stopped dancing and you saw her hands, they were perfectly manicured and the nails were a dark bloodred.”
To launch the polish, Louboutin teamed up once again with David Lynch for this odd space age video:
Lynch and Louboutin had previously collaborated in 2007 to bring us Fetish, an art exhibit for which the 2007 Ballet Ultima shoe was initially created. The show featured Lynch’s fetish photographs and one-of-a-kind shoes by Louboutin.
The bottle design and packaging:
The Cap: A true objet d’art of a dramatic 8-inch height inspired by the tallest heel Christian Louboutin ever created- the Ballerina Ultima, which was a collaboration with David Lynch in 2007.
The Bottle and The Brush: The iconic Rouge is encased in a faceted, weighted glass bottle with an unique ombré effect. Architectural yet whimsical, molded from cut glass and inspired by classical balustrades found in European buildings. The tall slender cap, inspired by calligraphy, turns the application into a luxurious experience, inviting women to take their time. The custom-designed, patented triangular brush picks up the right amount of formula, without air bubbles, to deliver flawless, chip-resistant coverage.
The Formula:
Highly pigmented, chip-proof, and resulting in a brilliantly shiny finish that mimics the reflection of patent leather. Free of toluene, formaldehyde, and DBP. The super glossy formula delivers in just two coats the effect of 20 layers of traditional lacquer.
The Box: Rouge Louboutin lacquer comes enclosed in a patent leather like finish presentation box with a red reveal.
Louboutin’s new range will extend beyond Rouge, featuring 31 lacquers that fall neatly into families of Nudes, Noirs, and Pop colors.
