MSCHF, the fresh-thinking Brooklyn Art Collective that loves to simultaneously embrace and poke fun at pop culture, trends and art, will be dropping yet more fun footwear on February 16th. With images and info just having leaked, the Big Red Boots are akin to a real-life version of those worn by cult cartoon Astro Boy, and fans of the anime character are already going nuts.

Whether inspired by Boots the monkey or Astro Boy, MSCHF’s Big Red Boots are coming.

MSCHF’s Big Red Boot may look a lot like Astro Boy’s rocket boots but the truth is they were inspired, at least in name, by the monkey co-host and companion on the Dora The Explorer TV series. Named Boots, the furry monkey wears…. you guessed it, Big Red Boots, all the time.

As far as Astro Boy goes, he was the first Japanese animated television series to ever make it to U.S. televisions. Japanese manga artist, cartoonist, and animator Osamu Tezuka first created the character Astro Boy as a manga in 1952 before he was introduced to children in Japan (and the U.S.) in 1963. The character has since become a cult figure.

Regardless of the inspiration (animated monkey or flying boy),  the cartoonish shoe designed for both men and women is made of a TPU rubber shell and has an EVA sole.

“You never design shoes to be shaped like feet,” MSCHF explains in a press release. “Big Red Boots are REALLY not shaped like feet, but they are EXTREMELY shaped like boots.”
