Oh, how I’d love to set my table with these plates. The Last Supper (Megaplex) by videographer and artist Marco Brambilla is a set of Bernardaud Limoges porcelain dinner plates that put a pop culture spin on The Last Supper. The Messiah from Da Vinci’s classic fresco has been replaced in the scenes that decorate the borders with characters from cult films.
The Last Supper (Megaplex)
Brambillo says of the project “The Last supper is a subject I’ve been fascinated by since I was very young. Since much of my work deals with sampling, the re-interpretations of the classic fresco by Dali, Warhol, and others has inspired other work of mine over the years. So when the opportunity came up to work with Bernardaud on a set of dinner plates, this seemed perfect context for another re-invention. My version of The Last Supper features movie characters arranged in roughly the same composition of the original.”
There are 12 “variations” of the famous Da Vinci painting, each featuring a different “Messiah” and a different set of disciples. 10 are classic characters from cult films, one is an iconic Indian Chief and the last represents “The President” flanked by the other replacement Messiahs.
Being the enormous film buff that I am, I’ve taken the liberty of showing a close-up of each plate with a still from the movie in which the character starred. Here’s a close look at each.
