Instead of being John Malkovich, this time around, the actor is being everyone else. By that I mean, he has replaced the subject in many a famous photograph in Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich – Homage to photographic masters series by Sandro Miller.

You may have to look twice at some of these to note that it’s John Malkovich in lieu of the original subject. Some of these images are so iconic that our brains immediately replace them with the ‘known’ rather than the ‘new’.

In 2013, photographer Sandro Miller embarked on a project honoring the men and women whose photographs helped shape his career. As a youth, Sandro learned much about composition, lighting and portraiture by studying the published works of such photographic masters as Irving Penn, Diane Arbus, Annie Leibovitz, Dorthea Lange and Robert Mapplethorpe. After selecting thirty-five images to emulate, Sandro contacted actor John Malkovich, whom he first photographed for a Nikon campaign about 14 years ago and has worked with on several occasions. Now his long time friend and collaborator, John instantly agreed to participate and thus we have “Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich – Homage to photographic masters series”

When speaking about Malkovich, Sandro states: “John is the most brilliant, prolific person I know. His genius is unparalleled. I can suggest a mood or an idea and within moments, he literally morphs into the character right in front of my eyes. He is so trusting of my work and our process… I’m truly blessed to have him as my friend and collaborator.”
Shown in this post are all* of the images from the show which opens November 7 and runs through January, 2015 at Chicago’s Catharine Edelman Gallery.
