Trying To Make Poop Cute In A Toronto Cafe

Way back in 2007, I introduced you to W’Duck, a restaurant in Portugal where diners sat upon toilets and to the chain of Modern Toilet restaurants which serve food in miniature toilet bowls. The trend of toilet-themed eateries has not yet waned and soon, Toronto will be getting one of their own.

Inspired by the fecal-focused Modern Toilet restaurant in Taiwan, Lien Nguyen (who has a degree in culinary management) will be opening Toronto’s first toilet themed dessert bar, The Poop Café, in mid-August.

Like W’Duck and Modern Toilet, diners will sit on unplumbed commodes and eat their food out of mini toilets and urinal-shaped dishes. Unlike the two aformentioned eateries, Poop Café will offer sweets only.

The George Brown College graduate said the menu will offer traditional Thai, Japanese and Korean desserts like patbingsoo (red beans with ice), as well as chocolate ice cream.

“I’m trying to make poop cute,” Ms Nguyen explained to the Toronto Star. “It’s funny to put food and poop together; it’s a great comparison. It stayed in my mind for a long time (referring to her visit at Taiwan’s Modern Toilet Restaurant). As soon as I finished school, I said, ‘OK, I’m going to bring the restaurant to Toronto.’”

These toilets will serve as seating for Nguyen’s Poop Café

Here are some photos of the cafe construction in progress:
