Order of Importance by artist Leandro Erlich opened at Art Basel Miami earlier this week. Commissioned by the City of Miami Beach and curated by Ximena Caminos with the collaboration of Brandi Reddick, the art installation will remain through the 15th December on the beach next to Lincoln Road and close to Collins Park.
Order of Importance Sand Sculpture
You may recognize the name of the artist as the man behind one of our most popular posts of all time, the fake swimming pool. This installation of Erlich’s features 66 life-size vehicles lined up as if stuck in traffic, submerged into the sand.
The installation represents the traffic problems that now plague most of our everyday lives. It illustrates how cars can destroy any landscape, city, street or square – it’s also a call for action regarding Climate Change (a theme prevalent in this year’s Miami Art Week).
It’s the artist’s largest installation to date and required two years of work and 330 tons of sand. The installation is said to cost $1 million.
