Beautifully Absurd MailChimp Campaign Breaks

Email marketing platform MailChimp has tapped agency Droga 5 to produce its first large ad campaign. The three one minute long spots, whose quirky direction style is reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s (without the symmetry) are made to emulate bizarre movie trailers.

Droga 5 MailChimp Campaign

The three commercials, which run unbranded, capitalize on the fact that the name of the email service is often mispronounced or misunderstood, according to the agency. The spots are produced by Riff Raff Films and directed by The Sacred Egg, former Mother London agency creatives Ed Kaye and Alex Mavo. Each faux movie title has its own microsite, or url** . The 3 accompanying “faux” movie posters, also unbranded except for a tiny mailchimp logo, were created by JUCO photo* of Los Angeles.

The films are part of the wider integrated campaign “Did You Mean?” and are running in select theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Atlanta, among other cities, and will also air on television starting Feb. 20.

The three spots, conceived of by Droga 5, produced by Riff Raff Films and directed by The Sacred Egg for MailChimp, which will roll out over the next few weeks.

**UPDATE: Much to my delight, I just discovered more urls purchased by MailChimp for the campaign and each has fun content!

They have purchased several urls for the campaign, each a phonetic variation on “MailChimp” and each contains its own fun content. Upon visiting the url, a snipe appears at the bottom of the page asking “Did you mean “MailChimp?”
