By now you’ve heard of the Ice Hotel and probably know that each year they hire designers and artists to create the Deluxe and Art Suites for the hotel located in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. This year’s Ice Hotel Suites went all out with some super impressive ice and snow sculpting.
Founded in 1989, Icehotel is all about ice and creativity – with art as the result. It is reborn in a new guise every winter when approximately 40 artists are invited to take part. The artists are not required to have worked with ice before – they’re selected from among those who send in their ideas based on originality and creating it in real natural ice would pose a new challenge. The notion that several weeks’ hard work and months of planning and preparation culminate in something that only exists for a few months is in some respects a bittersweet feeling.
In addition to the temporary rooms offered, they have ICEHOTEL 365, which is available year round.
The temperature inside the hotel hovers at a constant of -5 to -7 C. We provide you with expedition-style sleeping bags which are tested for extreme temperatures, so you’ll be fine with just thermals, hat, warm socks and a mid-layer jumper. You are given access to your room at 6 pm, but the heated service building, the Riverside Lobby, is staffed and open 24 hours, this is where you store your belongings, collect your sleeping bag and use the bathroom, shower and sauna. There is a tutorial for guests sleeping cold every day.
The suites in ICEHOTEL 28 are available until April 15, 2018. After that they slowly return to Torne River. The suites in ICEHOTEL 365 are available year round and the art will shift annually.
