KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has aligned themselves with some of the world’s best Dutch designers to upgrade to their World Business Class. Fashion designer Jan Taminiau has designed their new men’s and women’s amenity kits, textile and furniture designer Hella Jongerius has modernized the World Business Class cabin interiors of all their Airbus A330s (by the end of 2018, World Business Class throughout KLM’s entire ICA fleet will be fitted with new cabin interiors).

Lastly, product and interior designer Marcel Wanders has created 40 pieces of cutlery, glassware, porcelain and linen for their dining service available in their World Business Class.

The World Business Class service designed by Wanders between 2011 to the present combines eclectic contemporary ideas with inspired surprises. This collection includes a range of porcelain plates and bowls, glassware, cutlery, linen and serving trays with true character.

Marcel Wanders describes the project as follows:
“True vision here is to transform KLM travellers into KLM guests. To realize that premise, a universe of dynamic, ergonomic, beautiful and practical in-flight tableware was created (2011 to the present). The World Business Class service combines eclectic contemporary ideas with inspired surprises. This collection includes a range of porcelain plates and bowls, glassware, cutlery, linen and serving trays with true character. Ceramic bowls feature the Dutch Delft Blue pattern exemplifying connection between the past, present and future. Careful attention to detail, service experience, operational aspects, including production, loading and food preparation, as well as environmental considerations, such as weight reduction, inform every aspect of the design. The collection has been enriched with a Japanese and Indonesian service.”

At some point in time, Marcel actually designed this Airplane trolley for KLM:

Whether or not this is a prototype or was mass produced, I do not know, but it’s for sale here.

Industrial and product designers Julien Bergignat and Lisa Grahner both worked on the design development, 3d work and product design for the range.
