The Wild Makeup for Maison Margiela’s 2016 Artisanal Collection

International Makeup Artist and Creative Design Director of P&G Beauty, Pat McGrath, took over the catwalk with her incredible and unusual make-up for Maison Margiela’s Autumn-Winter 2016 ‘Artisanal’ Collection.

The French Fashion House, founded in Paris in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, is known for their fashion forward designs and androgynous approach to beauty. Conceptual and enigmatic, mysterious and iconoclastic, the brand’s runway shows often border on the bizarre.

Since 2014, Maison Martin Margiela has been under the guidance of Creative Director Mr. John Galliano, about whom I have avoided writing since his Anti-Semitic rant got him fired from Dior in 2011.

However, his new aesthetic for the brand, marries his own poetic vision with the codes of the house of Margiela and results in an unusual “Artisanal” Autumn-Winter 2016 collection. But it’s not the fashions I’m sharing with you today. It’s the artistic makeup and styling of the runway models that really pushes the creative boundaries and highlights the talent of those whose names often go under the radar.

As the models strutted down the runway at the Hôtel National des Invalides, their hair and makeup caught my eye more than the fashions.

Described as “Rebellion as perceived in beauty created using a wet paint process finished with highly-pigmented neon powder” the look was created by the brilliant Pat McGrath and her team, with hair by the innovative and influential Eugene Souleiman, expertly styled by Alexis Roche.
