Although it appears like one of nature’s incredible wonders – kind of like a lake with a sphincter – the Covao do Conchos Spillway in Portugal is a man made structure that is part of the Conchos Dam in Serra da Estrela, the country’s highest mountain range.

The small dam, built in 1955, has a hydroelectric system that gathers water from Ribeira das Naves and diverts it to Lagoa Comprida Dam through a 4,984 ft. (1519 meters) long tunnel made of concrete and granite.

The famous “lagoon waterfall” is 4.6m high, 48 meters wide at the top ,1,519 meters in length and can store up to 120 thousand cubic meters of water.
